Acomb Women's Institute

If you would like to contact the Acomb Women’s Institute please visit our facebook page Acomb WI.

We are a community-based organisation, part of the National Federation of Women’s Institutes, run by local women for local women. The Acomb WI was reformed in 2014.

  • President – Catherine Fergus.
  • Vice President – Valerie Mason.
  • Secretary – Cristina Andone.
  • Treasurer – Amanda Earnshaw.
  • Media – Helen Knott and Maura Oakes.

Acomb WI meetings are usually held on the 3rd Monday of the month at 7 pm for a prompt start of 7.15 pm.

Moving forward we hope to include members via Zoom for those who cannot always attend in person due to other commitments.

We normally meet in Acomb Village Hall.

We are part of the Northumberland WI,
11/12 Brenkley Way,
Blezard Business Park, Seaton Burn,
Newcastle upon Tyne,
NE13 6DS.

Tel: 0191 217 0808
Email: federationoffice@northumberlandwi.co.uk.

WI membership is £43 annually.

Due to the pandemic and the amount of fundraising done in previous years, there will be a reduction of fees for 2021/22. Fees are due in April. Guests can attend 3 meetings within a year without joining the WI or paying fees.

In addition to monthly meetings we also have a monthly craft group, book club and fundraising group.

We have also had regular sewing classes to learn the use of our own sewing machines.

We regularly meet up with other WI’s entering competitions and sometimes winning them.

We have had a varied group of speakers and visits to date and hope to continue to widen our range. Past speakers have included – reintroducing the red kite to Derwent Valley, a personal experience of living in communist Romania including a taste of the regional food, an evening with the Hex Pistols, a historical tour of Hexham and Corbridge, a guided tour of Chesters, living a transgender life, and Wheelbirks with the virtues of raw milk (including ice-cream tasting!).

We are a group of women who like to work for the benefit of the village helping with community events and fundraising.

For the past few years we have provided refreshments for many of the village events and started a community café to provide a place for people who needed somewhere to meet others in a safe space.

We are very welcoming to new WI members or people who may have just moved into the area. You do not have to live in Acomb to join up although most surrounding villages have their own group too.
