Acomb Community Café
Acomb Community Café (the café) was originally set up as a monthly pop up by Acomb WI, but it has proved so popular that since September 2022 it has been run as a separate entity with its own constitution and bank account.
The purposes of the café are to:
- To reduce social isolation by providing a meeting space for members of the Acomb community and visitors.
- To offer a facility that can provide refreshments for village organisations’ meetings and events.
- To provide funds for local community projects, as well as regional and national projects/initiatives that provide a direct benefit to the residents of Acomb parish.
Membership of the café is open to anyone, over the age of 18, who is a resident of Acomb parish, a café customer café volunteer and/or a member of any voluntary organisation based, or working, in Acomb.
The café regularly raises approximately £300 – 500 each month and the committee have agreed that the proceeds, after expenses, are distributed as follows:
4 cafes per year – local charities such as Little Oaks Nursery, Tynedale Hospice, food bank, charities for the homeless etc. We also hold fundraisers for major international/national disasters such as the Ukraine appeal
4 cafes per year – fundraising for WI
4 cafes per year – to cover café running costs and to support local groups that provide services/activities for the village e.g. craft and craic. Money is also raised to support the village hall improvements.
To date in 2023 the following donations have been made:
Tynedale Hospice at Home – £280
Hexham Youth Initiative (Acomb Youth Club) – £300
Acomb WI – £285
An additional £995 was raised, by providing refreshments at an open garden event, for the village hall refurbishment.
The café was awarded a grant from Karbon Homes that enabled us to provide a weekly lunch for seniors, or anyone who would benefit, after the craft and craic session on Fridays and to support families during school holidays.
The cafe also provided refreshments at the Platinum Jubilee and Coronation parties.
Volunteers Needed
We are always looking for volunteers to help at the café on the third Thursday of every month. Current opportunities are:
Setting up between 9am – 10am
Serving food, clearing tables and washing up 10am – 12pm, 12pm – 2pm
We would also benefit from having input from anyone skilled in the use of Microsoft Publisher, or similar software, to design the café menu and other material.
