In and Around Acomb

Acomb village lies within walking distance of Hadrian’s Wall, on the edge of  Northumberland  National Park. Acomb is Anglo Saxon,  akum ,  meaning ‘place of the oaks’, reflecting the fact that the area was covered with forest.

Acomb has two churches, Acomb Methodist Church in the village itself, and St John Lee Church of England which lies a short walk away.  St John Lee

We are lucky to have several excellent pubs within Acomb village, with three on the Main Street alone. The Sun Inn offers pet-friendly accommodation, while the Miners Arms specializes in real ales and traditional pub food. You can enjoy a drink at the bar at the Queens Arms , which also offers bed and breakfast accommodation, local provisions and a cafe facility.

For a delicious take away supper, try the Sea Chef fish and chip shop on Garden House Bank, open Thursday Friday and Saturday.

Acomb is the focal point for a number of beautiful walks and cycle routes. Popular walks include Acomb to Watersmeet, a designated site of special scientific interest for the flora and fauna, and Acomb to Heavenfield, the site of a historic battle as well as the beautiful St Oswald’s church. The church stands on St Oswald’s Way Pilgrimage Trail, which runs from Heavenfield to Holy Island (Lindisfarne) . From outside the church, there are magnificent views over to the Cheviot Hills.
